START - Students and Refugees Together

Cultivating Communities

Cultivating Communities

Every Thursday, 11.00am-2.00pm, Swarthmore allotments at Central Park
The allotment project offers an outside gardening space, which is used by individuals to grow their own food as well as a communal space to grow produce for the Cultural Kitchen. The space is divided into three areas: individual plots for the grower’s own use, a communal growing space and a 20ft poly tunnel. The plants and vegetables grown are varied and seasonal, reflecting both the diversity of the people attending the project and the varieties that grow well in Plymouth. The allotment is a safe open place, a space to think, a place away from stressful issues and for some it can be a link to earlier lives:

'My grandfather had a lot of land in India, he planted corn, beans, and ladyfingers.. I love to come up here, dig and grow my own food’

Allotment Attendee

The connection with the Cultural Kitchen promotes healthy eating and a greener environment through the growing and sharing of produce and the composting of kitchen waste.

Regular volunteers, including those drawn form the refugee and asylum communities as well as students on placement at START, support ‘Cultivating Communities’.

The project promotes integration through its links with other organisations including BTCV and Diggin’ it.
