START is unusual in that the majority of the workforce are students on practice placements from a range of disciplines. The high quality staff are employed to manage the organisation and supervise and support students. All have relevant experience and have undertaken training in student support.
High standards of professional supervision are matched by high expectations on the students to be enthusiastic, resourceful, responsible and skilled learners. These qualities matter more than age or previous experience.
START’s approach of working with the strengths people have, means that there are a lot of opportunities for students to make a contribution to the lives of people who are building a new life in the city.
Successful practice learning has been completed by students from a wide range of disciplines: From Social Work, Occupational Therapy, and Youth and Community Work to Clinical Psychology, Nursing, Photography and Geography. We welcome international students too and regularly have placement students from Germany.
Please download our student placement leaflet for further information.
