Students and Refugees Together

Students at START

Student Placements

START is unique because students on practice placements make up the majority of the workforce. START recruits students who are enthusiastic, resourceful, responsible and skilled learners from the UK and internationally.

There are lots of opportunities for students at START to make a contribution to the lives of people who are building a new life in the city.

Students from a wide range of disciplines including social work, occupational therapy and clinical psychology have completed successful practice learning at START. We welcome international students too and regularly have students from Germany, France and Norway.

To enquire about being a Student on placement with START please contact us at  07841 985 252 or fill out the below contact form.

‘START is a very special organization for students as we contribute such a big part of the work.’

‘It was a valuable opportunity to challenge my own and others’ prejudices and to explore diversity.’

‘It gives opportunities for creative social work and breaking out of the statutory sector.’

‘It demands but also furthers one’s ability to work innovatively, using initiative and life experience.’

After working with us our students often go onto work with refugees. One of our international students, Lisa, who is a social worker with refugees in Germany, talks about her experience with START and how it influenced her career in this Video. Click Here

Student Research

START is a learning organisation and we are committed to contributing to the advancement of knowledge. We regularly advise on and participate in student research that is related to our work. If you are currently a student undertaking research and would like our input please make an enquiry in the contact form below. Every request is considered, whatever your discipline or level of study and a decision about access will be given quickly.

Before you apply please note:

  • Any research project should align with the strengths approach.
  • Engagement with refugees requires informed consent and trust which can take a year or more to build.
  • Staff, students and trustees will fully support any approved research.
  • Research findings should be shared with participants and a summary made available for the website.
